OpenUp – Codebridge
Cape Town, South Africa
Trained as a computer scientist and founder of OpenUp (formerly Code for South Africa), a civic technology organisation promoting the use of data and technology to drive social change. Through OpenUp he launched South Africa’s first data journalism academy which sought to train a new generation of journalists who love nothing more than curling up with a spreadsheet while in bed. He was awarded a fellowship from the International Centre for Journalists to promote the use of civic technology in journalism and was part of the team that won the Vodacom Journalist of the year award in the online category. He was also part of the multi-award winning #guptaleaks team. He continues to experiment with how media can be used as a platform for civic engagement.
He was also awarded a fellowship from Make All Voices Count, to support civil society organisations to use data in order to empower South Africans to improve their lives. He is a founding member of the Open Data and Democracy initiative, an Open Knowledge ambassador and established a guerrilla gardening group that re-purposes neglected public spaces.
