In June, the Organised Crime & Corruption Reporting Project and Finance Uncovered published Sandcastle a number of hard-hitting stories focusing on kleptocrats, Politically Exposed People, criminals and alleged tax evaders who owned Dubai real estate. The story came about thanks to an unprecedented leak of Dubai real estate information. It was published in leading outlets around the world including Premium Times, Süddeutsche Zeitung and the UK Observer. Margot Gibbs led the Finance Uncovered investigation. This session will show how she organised the data using excel and then verified the names of individuals who made the headlines by using corporate registries, court records and social media tools.
There is scope for African journalists to dig into the data to see if they can identify those relevant to their countries subject to certain conditions. Come to the session to learn how to access the data.
